A super-exciting and fun to read graphic novel/comics about a group of people (Vigil) who are in war with Necromancers.

There is plenty of action but also lots of humour to lighten the mood (like Sam commenting on the fact that everyone is taking their shirts off when they are near him). So I laughed, but also rooted for the characters. I am glad that there was so much humour, because I think if this book was all seriousness I would have liked it less. It also made the characters, especially Bernie a bit more human and less a few thousands year old lady who seems very distant at times.

I wasn’t a fan of the necromancers, though most of them were just manipulated idiots. And really, I was pissed at the reasons why that woman was so gung-ho on getting the scythe. Really? You could have just thought a bit more but, noooooo. You only cared about one thing, and look where that brought you?

I was definitely shipping Sam and Bernie together, they make quite a couple and was hoping that Bernie would go for it. Yes, she is a few thousands of years old and Sam isn’t as old as that, but they were so cute together. I loved how they were always there for each other no matter the situation.

For a long time I thought that our Vigil was the only one around, but we find out that there are other Vigils as well and now I want to go to them.

I loved our girl, Clara. I loved seeing her get used to life as a dead girl, I loved her “weapon” and seeing her figure out what it was (her memory is a bit fuzzy) and see her use it to the full potential. She was such a great character and while I feel sad she died due to a dick boyfriend, I guess it is also good she did because she finally found a family, people who care about her and who love her. Haha, I do hope this doesn’t sound too terrible.

The battle near the end WOW WOW WOW. That was just one rollercoaster of awesomeness and I was already stuck in the book… well now I was even more. There is a ton of things happening, monsters popping up, monsters being eaten, battle plans brought to action, and so much more. And just when you thought things were over, haha, BOOM, betrayal and more battle. Holy crap!

The art, fantastic! Love it! Then again, Stjepan Šejić is one of my favourite artists. Sunstone was just as gorgeous as this one. I love how the artist is able to show emotions and does a great job with facial expressions.s

All in all, I now need the second volume. I need more!

The first few pages were gripping and I was hooked. The female reaper was an interesting take. The premise puts a new meaning to "dying for a cause." The art was beautiful and fit the story perfectly. My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed. I'm interested in seeing where this series heads.

'Death Vigil: Volume 1' by Stjepan Šejić is about a group of grim reapers trying to fight off evil. It took a while to win me over, but at 284 pages and 8 issues, it eventually did.

Bernadette is the lead reaper. Her army consists of people she's collected at death. Their enemy are the necromancers, with their tentacled horrors. After Bernadette creates a new Death Knight, they all receive a sort of weapon to use in the war. The weapons all relate to them personally, so one has a pick and shovel, another has a deck of cards, and the newest member has a feather. Discovering how to use them is up to each new Death Knight. They are a close knit family with the kind of secrets that only long term family can have. Some of that may come back to haunt them.

It took me a bit to get into this, but I ended up really liking it. The character interaction was really good, and had enough gallows humor to keep me turning pages. I mostly liked the art, but the characters were drawn a little too perfect to me, but I liked the individual character design. The monsters were actually pretty cool, and I liked the shapeshifting white T-Rex. You'll have to read it to see what I mean.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Death Vigil was a great read, and I only wish there was more to the universe that Sejic created. I feel like there are quite a few more stories to be told. Oh, and his art is pretty great.

I thought this was a really cool concept. Certain gifted individuals are granted a chance at death to join in the fight against other-worldly incursions of horrific creatures who want to destroy reality. Surprisingly, there are a number of light moments in this book, as well. I liked the character development. Heck, I liked the characters. Interesting group. I am sort of sorry I couldn't find a volume 2.

Death Vigil follows Bernie who is a leader of a group of warriors whose enemy is the necromancers. On her death, Clara gets offers a choice to join the Death VIgil or to die. It is here the story progressing into a fast-paced adventure with plot twists that you will not see coming.
Overall, Death Vigil is one of my favourite graphic novels that I read this year, it has such a massive world which is detailed and well explored and it is fast-paced and has really lovable characters and the artwork was very well done. It is probably really easy to get bored of the story if you do not like however this is not case with me. The graphic novel itself is over 280 pages which means that it is a lot of material to read which I really enjoyed and it expanded the graphic novel world a lot which I loved.
The plot of the graphic novel is really fast-paced and was unexpected which I really loved and found really interested. The beginning of the story left me hooked from the start, as we are already introduced to the world and it gives us backstory to characters. The plot goes from one interesting plot point to another which leaves you becoming invested in the story and not being bored. The plot itself involves two points of view in the story which again keeps you involved in the story. The ending is also full of plot twists that I did not see coming. Overall, the plot is fast-paced and high enjoyable.
Overall, the characters are really enjoyable and highly likeable. All the characters are developed especially Bernie, Sam and Clara who are the most developed and my favourite characters. The relationship between characters are also interesting to read about especially that of Bernie and Sam and Sam and Clara which well-developed and nice especially to have in graphic novels.
Overall, the artwork in the graphic novel was really interesting and I really enjoyed it however I did have some problems with it. This is more with the layout as the frames were often quite full with lots of dialogue which was quite tedious at times as it made it fill really long to read however the graphic novel was over 200 pages so this could mean that they did want to save pages however I am not sure this really worked for me.
Overall, Death Vigil was a really enjoyable graphic novel which I recommend for anyone who loves fantasy. It is also a graphic novel that I will happily continue with this graphic novel series.
