Not a fan of this - my cons (and not everyone else’s) are that I do not like first person narratives in Fantasy - it seems to lose any suspension of disbelief, and becomes kind of ridiculous sounding when you read the words - also, not a fan of the whole nick-naming thing - Once in a while, maybe, but the entire group has a nickname, and nothing that makes anyone stand out - I felt nothing for any of the characters - when one of the company dies, I was very unmoved at the event - all in all I read this because it is filed under Classic Fantasy, but this is one that will not remain on my shelves nor will I proceed with this series - I am extremely disappointed, but there are a million books in the world, and I have more to go.

Great story with excellent writing. Loved the POV of the narrator. No surprise that this book is so well-loved; the fantasy is a refreshing take on familiar themes of war, mercenaries, and evil as a matter more of perspective. Can't wait to get into the rest of the series!

I really enjoyed the flexible morality of the allegiances in this book, along with the ending. There was an unfortunate disconnectedness in the book, which caused some confusion. However, all in all, I really enjoyed it.

Interesting.
Found it difficult at first but it did grow on me.

A bit disjointed. I thought I was missing parts of it. Will read another one to see if I want to continue with the series.

Mostly, I think this is forgettable. To quote a friend, I don't regret reading it, but that's about it. It had some really poor writing, but I can forgive that if a universe is compelling. In this case, the author failed to make me care. It just felt like a series of fantasy tropes, down to the convention of using archetypes as names, which didn't come off as clever as I think the author intended. Overall, disappointing.
