Another enjoyable enough read, but I can tell I’m getting wearier with each book from Fade Out on. So, no one can leave Morganville but all of a sudden it’s okay that Morley has and becomes a mayor of another Morganville? That doesn’t track with anything that’s happened so far, at all. While I enjoyed the action and suspense, it wasn’t enough to cover that plot hole filler…

Eighth in the Morganville Vampires urban fantasy series for young adults. This particular installment is about Michael and a potential recording contract!

My Take
Whoa...I never thought to see the day that Amelie would allow Michael, Shane, Eve, or Claire to leave town! Although Oliver's presence puts a bit of a damper on things. But not for long, and certainly not when they hit that one-horse town.

One particular key element occurs in this one: Eve finds her signature car.

Snicker...Juluglar, Texas. Hmmm, wonder where she means...LOL

Yet more whoa...the road trip from hell. This could easily be one of those slasher movies with all the violence and mayhem. Just a bit of Morganville transferred down the road apiece and mixed with a lot of crazy.

Who knew a number 2 pencil could have such a powerful effect.

The Story
Michael gets an offer for a couple days at a recording studio as well as plans for some club dates in Dallas. It's the dream of his lifetime. His former, living, breathing lifetime.

Even better...Amelie gives all four of them passes to drive down to Dallas. Provided Oliver goes with them.

The Characters
Claire Danvers is a genius who got trapped in Morganville when she chose to attend Texas Prairie University---she's too valuable to be allowed to leave, and she works for Myrnin, a crazed, mad scientist vampire. She's one of four housemates in the Glass House including her boyfriend Shane Collins with a major hate for vampires; Eve Rosser is the Gothic barista; and, Michael Glass, vampire and musician.

Claire's mom and dad are living in Morganville; dad has some crazy job. Hannah Moses is the sheriff.

Amelie is the Founder of Morganville, the head vampire and Claire's boss. Oliver is her rival and the owner of Common Grounds where Eve works. He's a major jerk and always seems one step away from draining their lives away. Morley is a crazy, skanky, British vampire tired of waiting for Shane to fulfill his promises. Patience and Jacob Goldman somehow hooked up with Morley. Now they're the only protection the kids have.

Jason Rosser is Eve's psychotic brother and a part of Claire's worst memories. Monica Morrell is the Queen Bee Bitch of Morganville, who will do anything to hurt anyone. Claire is one of her favorite targets. Jennifer is "one of her lipstick mafia girls".

Orange Cap, Berle, and Angry Guy must be friends of that jerk sheriff. Linda owns the motel and has the brother, Ernie, who sells used cars. Bishop was Amelie's crazy father. And a busy bee it seems.

Mrs. Grant is the librarian in Blacke; she's also what's holding what's left of the town together.

The Cover
The cover is pink and shades of gray with a soft black as an empty road stretches out behind Eve with her own soft pink hair, and softer gray ensemble. It's a quarter moon up in the sky, shrouded by an ominous-looking cloud bank.

The title is all about contact with the crazed vampires they run into in Blacke. One touch is a Kiss of Death.

This is my least favorites of this series. What happened to Eve's character ? She acted dumb as a stick, what's up with the food lust ? She almost ruined the story for me. Claire, Shane, Micheal and Oliver take over in this book, while Eve just causes problems. They finally get to leave Morganville, with Oliver to "guide" them and only for 5 days. Off to Dallas they go, except they make a stop where all you know what breaks lose and the gang has to save themselves and the town they fall into. Things get hairy for the gang, new vampires threaten as well as good ole' boys in no-where Texas. Is this the chance for freedom from Morganville ?

I didn't actually expect to like this one as much as I did, what with the 4 main characters leaving Morganville, but when all the trouble began to kick off, I found myself sucked in as usual.

The way Claire stood up and really showed her bravery, especially when she shot Morley with an arrow when he thought she didn't have it in her, made me realise that I forgot she was only 17!

onto book 9!

Wow, what an explosive book! I read this in just under four hours. What Claire, Shane, Eve, and Michael all experience of this road trip caught me by surprise. It went well with the previous stories and plots. And I liked to see Oliver in a new kind of light. All the while, Claire continues to impress me. With each book she becomes bolder, stronger, and more fierce. I believe she will soon be a very strong force in Morganville, one that will need respect.

Roadtrip btchs!

Michael gets an offer to go to Dallas and record a demo CD after a local concert one night. But wait, no one leaves Morganville…

Meanwhile Morley starts making his moves against Shane and Eve bc of their deal from the last book to escape the tunnel alive.

So Claire goes to Amelie to ask about passes out of town… this wasn’t real clear to me; I think she was trying to get Morley and his associates out, but instead she’s given 4 passes, with their names printed on them which isn’t enough anyway (but is for Claire Shane Eve and Michael of course). And their escort. Who is their escort you may ask? Bum bum bum…. Oliver of course.

They head out of MV and Oliver mentions a pit stop he must make, but not way. And that’s where everything begins to go wrong. Hassled for trying to get ice cream, Eve’s car is burned, Claire Shane and Eve  are arrested for murder… while hanging out in jail waiting to be saved, some vamps do bust in. Just not their vamps. And the downhill slide continues.

So you’re got murder, kidnapping, daring escapes, rogue vampires made by Bishop before he shot his shot, unlikely alliances, etc.

Rachel Caine is a wonderful writer. This can’t top The Great Library for me, but it’s solid and damn good. Each book builds upon the previous ones. The characters are genuine and mostly lovable. Even the “bad guys” have their moments. And though the books are short (which I typically steer clear of), they seem to hold a lot of content.
