I enjoyed this tale. It had political intrigue, a brawny slave, an angelic prince, betrayal, loyalty, a secret baby, assassins, fights, and sex - lots of kinky sex.

ahahahahaha okay, so basically, some brave soul started out the standard fare palace slave dubcon pornfest (y'know, the cruel raven-haired vampire-pale prince picks himself up a subby-subby-subbiest virgin farmboy as a bedslave, and there're whippings and dicks and forced orgasms all around), and then like thirty pages in the author visibly got bored and also ran out of dubcon porn tropes and basically decided to Get. Their. Fantasy. On. the wild plot appears! the characters grow personalities! hurt/comfort creeps in! actually weirdly solid theological worldbuilding is applied! (a multitude of fucking scenes is still present, with 99% less dubcon).

there's a really hilarious scene mid-novel wherein the prince tries to apologise and also kind of retcon his early pornapalooze behavior into something befitting his new status of Woobie With Damage, and his ex-slave lover basically lets him off with 'eh, i get that you needed to make the plot happen'.

all jokes aside, it was a - suprisingly cute and heartwarming experience, and a perfect stress-relief.

This book is not only engrossing in plot but let me tell you, the sex scenes between the MC’s are kept fresh and incredibly sensual. Dare makes each and every sexual encounter between Garin and Alar fresh and invigorating. The sex in this book is not the same old hat. It’s involved in the storyline and flows seamlessly with the plot, and each and every encounter makes the relationship between the two main characters palpable and real.

This book is GREAT and is something that will stay with me for a very long time. Yes the language can be a bit flowery but beyond that, this book is wonderful. I look forward to reading much more from this author. Never judge a book by its cover!

After Garin stands up to a royal herald, Prince Alar takes him as his slave. Garin was raised in a small peasant village where homosexuality was punished, so his time with the prince is an eye-opening experience. The royal court is as decadent and deadly as rumored. But before Garin grows completely disgusted with Alar, the prince saves his life, possibly at the cost of his own.

This is an odd book to review, because the first few chapters are not particularly thoughtful or innovative erotica. Just another blue-blooded perfect-at-everything type topping the hell out of an innocent farmboy. But then the plot kicks in and the characters start caring for each other, and it gets rather more engaging. The female side characters were actually my favorite part of this, from the rough-voiced physician so invested in studying the human body that she tortures people, to the princess with an economist's mind.

There are no real living angels in this story. Do not expect one.

The book is very heavy on sex and all kinds of deadly injuries and prolonged recoveries. Nothing wrong with any of it, just not favorites of mine. A star off for that. The first few chapters seem to be a rough draft. Another star off for that.

But if you're brave enough to rough it out, go ahead and read, you might be pleasantly surprised in the end. The story and the writing improved greatly after the fight during the hunt, the characters started acting, thinking and talking like people and not broken records skipping tracks. I stopped trying to figure out what was going on and why and started to enjoy the story at the same time as I came to like both Alar and Garin enough to care for them and the future of Navarra.

3.5 stars and wish I could give it more, but not in the current state of editing disaster.

I mean, it's about a pretty young farm boy who gets enslaved by a cruelly beautiful prince who also happens to be the son of a fallen angel, and then they fall in love. I could have done without the falling in love part, but that's the kind of concept that you pretty much know when you start if that's the kind of thing you appreciate or not.
