ok so. every time i buy a murakami at barnes and noble, the person checking me out ALWAYS says “ohh nice choice, but have you read wind up bird chronicle yet??” yeah, now i have. and it was NOT good :/

This has to be one of the strangest books I've ever read! I don't mean that in a bad way. Not all of its parts matched up or even made sense as a whole, but each part felt like it was where it needed to be to complete the story.

This book was really interesting and beautifully written. It’s also probably the last Murakami I will read for a while. I’m kind of sick of the objectification of women that he relies on as plot devices and the confusing story lines that only sort of wrap up at the end. Probably his most creative and least sexist work I’ve read though.

Really enjoyed it. Bizarre fantastical realism, set in Japan, in what at first seems to be a normal household but soon we find that in this particular household things are a little weird and fate plays a large part in everything. If you go with the flow (another big theme of the novel) you'll enjoy it.

ถ้าเทียบกับเรื่องอื่นๆ ของมุราคามิ เรื่องนี้ถือว่าดำเนินเรื่องช้าและไปเรื่อยๆ กว่ามาก แม้จะมีเป้าหมายที่ต้องการชัดเจนแต่พระเอกมักจะใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่ในการใช้ชีวิตประจำวัน นั่งครุ่นคิดถึงชีวิต ซึ่งจริงๆ สิ่งเหล่านี้ก็มีอยู่ในหนังสือของมุรารามิทุกเรื่อง เพียงแต่ว่ากับเรื่องนี้มันมีเยอะกว่าเรื่องอื่นๆ เท่านั้นเอง

เราไม่ติดกับการที่ตอนจบของเรื่องไม่ได้ให้คำตอบอะไรชัดเจน เอาจริงๆ ก็ชินแล้วจากเรื่องก่อนๆ ของนักเขียนคนนี้ แต่จะให้ความสำคัญกับระหว่างการเดินทางจากต้นจนจบมากกว่า ซึ่งก็ต้องบอกว่ากับเรื่องนี้เรายังไม่ได้ชอบขนาดนั้น มีหลายช่วงที่รู้สึกสนุกไปกับเรื่องพิลึกต่างๆ ที่พระเอกเจอ แต่ก็มีอีกหลายช่วงที่รู้สึกเบื่อและอยากให้ผ่านไปไวๆ บวกกับความหนาของหนังสือก็ทำให้แอบเหนื่อยเหมือนกัน

โดยรวมแล้วถือว่าไม่ได้แย่แต่ก็ไม่ได้ดีมาก เหมือนได้กลับมาในโลกที่คุ้นเคยอีกครั้ง เพียงแต่ว่าอาจจะไม่ได้รู้สึกติดใจเท่ากับแต่ก่อน
