Don't let the first few chapters fool you -  this book starts out feeling like it's going to be about a misogynistic, controlling society. It quickly unwravels to reveal a complex dystopian, post-apocalyptic world that has many layers and exciting characteristics. It does follow a dual narration structure (past/present), so if you aren't a fan of that, I'd avoid this book. The switch in time periods is a little confusing at first but quickly becomes easy to track. The character development is strong without sacrificing the plot's complexity or interest, which I really liked. There were a few characters and plot points that were promising and strong, yet they were quickly forgotten and/or underutilized, which Is why I didn't give this a 5.
