The 'contemporary' setting at the start was unnecessary. It would have been better to start with the historical content. Overall, this is definitely a hackneyed piece of pulp fiction.

One of my favorite historical fiction books. It has a darkness to it that reminds me of the works of EAP. I recommend reading it with a dark ambience!

Entertaining

This is an interesting early book on a werewolf; it is also a skewering of politics, the issues of wealth vs poverty, and of mental institutions (the latter more near the end of the book). It is convincing as a tale surrounding a “historical document.” Recommended for horror aficionados and those interested in the history of the genre. There are a few elements of the gothic in the persecution of the church under lurid claims. Interesting observations on who really is a monster.

This story is very dark, but it was a good read. It took me a while to get into it and get a handle on what was happening and then I became invested. I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of it or read it until now.

I got too busy and the book was not interesting enough to keep my attention. It was time to let it go after already renewing the library loan once.

Well that was dark…
This was my first foray into Werewolf horror as I usually prefer vampires. I can see how this book set precedent  for the whole genre in a similar manner to Dracula in vampire fiction. It was an interesting read for sure but it took me absolutely forever to read. Definitely give the content warnings a look over before you read
