I don't know why I continue to force myself to finish book that are, at best, mediocre.

OMG, I felt like this took me ten years to read. I hate my life sometimes.

If you are ok with punching yourself in the face, please feel free to read this book.

I adore these Irene Kelly books. They're so well written, so beautifully plotted and invariably gripping. This one is terrific - it unfolds over three different eras, which I don't usually like, but Burke tells the story so well, and the characters are so interesting, that it held me throughout. And it was fascinating to find out more about O'Connor, who has always been there in Irene's background.

"i'm sorry. i was thinking so loud, i didnt hear you."

"why do you talk like that? like a sailor?"
"why should men haev sole ownership of swear words? why should you be the only ones who get to express your anger?"
"its un-"
"dont you dare say unladylike."
"all right. its unbecoming. and unprofessional."
i stood up and stepped onto the seat of my wooden chair and shouted, "any man in this room who has never said the word 'fuck' please raise your hand."
dead silence. no hands went up. i saw wrigley move to his office door. he was looking at o'connor and grinning.
"thank you," i said. "oconnor believes you are all unprofessional. take it the fuck up with him."
there was laughter and applause, a lot of hooting and hollering at oconnor, who left the room as i got down off my chair.

"you've just got to show people what you've got, thats all. never mind trying to impress them any other way-just use your own skill. let it speak for itself."
"what if thats not enough?"
"if that isnt enough, nothing else ever will be."

"he wouldnt be the first to blame other people for what were really the consequences of his own actions."

Well done, tying the past to the present along many strands.

Finally a book that was good!!
This is one of the better Jan Burke novels that I have read. The story is interesting it's set in 1958, 1978 and 2000. Two couples go missing one night after they went out on their yacht. The older couple's bodies are found but their son and daughter in law disappear. On that same night their baby is kidnapped from their home and his nanny killed. Irene Kelly is a new reporter in 1978 and learns about the case from her mentor who was invovled in it in 1958.

I couldn't put it down at some parts!
