This is a book that broke my heart. Every person's story got to me in a different way. In particular, the stories of Claudia, Pauline and Pecola resonated with me. There was Claudia's hatred of her Christmas gift - a blond, blue-eyed baby doll - that all the adults in her life seemed to treasure but for her was a source of confusion. She knew what she was supposed to do with the baby doll, but all she wanted to do was dismember it so she could figure out what it was made of and why it had so much power over everyone else. There was Pauline's transformation into "Polly," who gradually grew to love her role as housekeeper to her white family more than she loved her role as wife and mother in her own family because she was respected and could create the orderly house she craved. And, of course, the story that completely and totally broke my heart is the story of Pecola, who is born beat down and who never experiences a moment of kindness. People are horrible to her and then, in the end, they just avoid her altogether. My heart aches for her.

I see Pecola. The need to have someone in your corner, to have someone love and foster your care is detrimental step in being seen by the world.
