This was a really cute read for children and adults. I am wanting to read the William Allen White and Newbury Award winner books. Even as an adult it is nice to go back and read about the innocence of children. Praire is quite the kid - she isn't perfect but she has a good heart. She loves her chickens, and while I'm scared to death of birds which started with chickens it still made me smile.

I loved this book. Prairie and Ivy were so real.

If I were ten years old again, this book would be read over and over again.

This really isn't my type of book, but an adult patron raved about it to me, so I gave it a whirl. I ended up really enjoying it, though I found the ending a tad unrealistic.

A nice little story. And thank the stars for a cover that perfectly conveys the feel of the book.

I really enjoyed this story about fifth-grader Prairie Evers, who is the new kid in New Paltz, New York. She hadn't wanted to leave North Carolina, but the fact that her Grammy came with them made it more bearable. But when Grammy decides to return home and Prairie's parents make her, a previously home-schooled kid, go to school, she is worried. How will she have time to properly take care of her chickens? Who will help her parents at all the farmer's markets and craft bazaars? And most importantly, will she find a friend? Does she even want one?

Then Prairie meets Ivy Blake, and the friendship becomes a lifeline for both girls. Followed by a companion book, The Education of Ivy Blake.

Like Capricorn in "Schooled," Prairie has never attended school and isn't sure how to interact with the kids. Like Ruby in "Love, Ruby Lavender'" Prairie has a strong and supportive relationship with her spunky grandmother. Like Ally in "Every Soul a Star," Prairie has a strong connection with the natural world. And like these characters, Prairie is a unique and likable character. Airgood is a talented writer and has given Prairie an unusual and authentic voice. With short chapters and lots of ups and downs, the story moves quickly. I appreciated that not every aspect of the story ended positively, and that adults were portrayed pretty evenly. I think 4th and 5th grade girls who appreciate quirky friendship stories will appreciate "Prairie Evers."

One is the Sunshine State Readers books. My daughter and I took turns reading chapters. She ended up reading eight extra chapters last night while I was at scouts with my son and left me a note that I had to catch up. That's high praise from her!
