A touching tale on how friendship can come in all shapes, sizes and colors with a good introduction to the role of the Navajo Code Talkers in WWII.

A mixture of history and family drama. This is the story of coming-of-age during WWII and dealing with family separation, racism, bullying, and changing friendships. There is just enough history of Victory Gardens, tin collections, and Navajo Code Talkers to hold the interest of readers without overwhelming them. A little magical realism is involved. The ending felt a bit abrupt but I would still recommend the book.

Code Word Courage is a pretty good book. The characters are the opposite of flat, and it alternates perspectives, which I'm a sucker for. The end was kind of hard to understand, and it left some stuff out, in my opinion, but it was a great read.

Larson does a fabulous job of telling the story through the eyes if various characters including, Bear, the dog. A wonderful story of friendship, loyalty, war, and beliefs this has wide appeal to kids. Grades 3 and up
