I began reading this expecting a lot of new stories from some of my favourite authors, but was quickly dissapointed to find that this had more extracts from other books than original stories. The extracts are from some books I have read, but mostly books I haven't, where some are sitting on my shelf waiting to be read.

The original stories I did like, and thought they really stood out, but for most of the extracts I did not read them for two reasons. The ones that I have waiting to be read it made no sense to me to just read a chapter or two from a random place in a book and not really get the whole story. For the ones I don't own I did not see the point in reading an extract from a book I wouldn't read.

Overall I did enjoy the original stories, but was disappointed in the rest of the book.

I started reading this in March, and I’m ashamed that it has taken me this long to read it. I only read it when I had time to read a whole story, because I didn’t want to dip in and out of stories as they were all so different.

As you may have noticed, for each story I have updated my reading progress with a rating, so that any stories I did not enjoy would not tarnish my view of the book as a whole. It was difficult to give the whole book a rating, due to how varied the stores were. There were some I really loved, and some I really hated.

So on my blog, I have decided to review this book as usual, but I will share with you briefly my thoughts of each individual stories, so that my favourites can stand out against those I really didn’t like.

But just to give a brief overview:

My favourite original short stories were The Unicorn by James Dawson, my fave, Tumbling by Susie Day, Humming Through My Fingers by Malorie Blackman, and Gentlewoman by Laura Dockrill.

The extracts that made me want to read more included The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle, Rani and Sukh by Bali Rai, Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman, Heroic by Phil Earle and Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith.

Full reviews of every story and extract can be found on my blog

Before I discuss my thoughts on this book with you, I’ll just say this. This book contains stories/excerpts by Malorie Blackman, Maureen Johnson, Catherine Johnson, Philip Pullman, James Dawson, Jenny Downham, Patrick Ness, E. Lockhart, Lauren Myracle, Laura Dockrill, Gayle Forman, Markus Zusak, Susie Day, David Levithan, Lauren Kate, Tabitha Suzuma, Andrew Smith, Marcus Sedgwick, Bali Rai, Non Prat, Matt Haig, Phil Earle and Melvin Burgess.

I know, all of those well-known authors, sounds exciting right? I was really looking forward to this book because I absolutely love some of the authors that have contributed to this anthology. What I didn’t realize however, is that most of the stories in here are EXCERPTS. They are part of that author’s actual novel. For example, Markus Zusak’s story is from I Am The Messenger.

I did highly enjoy the original story by Malorie Blackman. It was very unique and funny and it made me so excited for the rest of the book. But I just didn’t enjoy the rest of the book as much. I highly enjoyed reading Tabitha Suzuma’s excerpt because it came from the book Forbidden, which I adored.

Actually, I was a bit afraid during the entire book. I was terrified that I was going to get spoiled because I haven’t read a lot of the books that were featured in this anthology. I don’t think I was spoiled though -thank the universe- but the fear was still there! I did get to discover some books and authors that I didn’t know before which is a very good thing. I’ll definitely be picking up some of the books mentioned here.

Overall, I’d say that Love Hurts was a nice read, it was just very different than what I expected.

I always feel guilty writing bad reviews but this was just... so bad. I’m keeping this short since I’m typing this on my phone but here we go. First of all, I got the impression it was a collection of short stories. It’s not. There’s 1/3 short stories and 2/3 excerpts from random published books? Those excerpts really made no sense to me whatsoever. You just get dumped in the middle of an existing book and try and figure out what the hell is going on.
Second, the few new short stories were not good. I did not really like any of them? Most were about 15-year-olds which I don’t identify with anymore and I try to read books with older protagonists. So bummer. But besides the young main characters I just didn’t like the stories? The only one I felt okay about was about the transgender girl, Dan turning into Danni. So, in the end, I only read the short stories and skipped the excerpts but in the end I also decided to skip over some of the short stories because after reading like 5 pages I still didn’t like them. So it’s a DNF for me but I marked it as finished to write this review.

Like most people, a little disappointed that this book included so many extracts from others as it wasn't apparent from the blurb/cover, though I did enjoy re-reading those I'd loved. A little hit and miss at times; some of the short stories were excellent (James Dawson's The Unicorn comes immediately to mind), some were a struggle to get through.

I really enjoyed this anthology. I knew quite a few of the authors, and there was a wide range of genres including SCI-fi, historical and general ya romance. The book contains quite a few excerpts from books, and they outnumber the original short stories, which I found slightly disappointing, although it might introduce you to some new books to read. I recognised or had read a lot of the books the excerpts came from. A nice reminder of past books, books yet to be read, and love in general.
