I couldn't appreciate the obscure cultural references, extended untranslated passages in French, and the experimental stylistics of this novel, but was very much taken and enthralled by the story of the Chagosians and their dispossession of their homeland. The weaving in of the authors' personal histories including the suicide of one of their brothers was distracting and confusing to me.
