I was very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. Despite it being a summer reading requirement, I was able to dive into Stevenson’s life and care about the people he was talking about. The book showed me how people are making strides in any way they can, and also showed me a side of the criminal justice system that a white woman like me will never experience. I am now firmly against the death penalty as a result of this book and am decidedly more educated about certain practices that go on in this country.

Heavy, but necessary. Illuminates the humans stories of those we have locked up and forgot about. Connects how we punish people for being poor, details mass incarceration. Asks poingant questions about capital punishment.

This book was an absolutely inspiring, thrilling, and emotional read! I’m so glad to have picked it up. I couldn’t put it down.

Very inspiring, though a bit simple. This is, of course, due to its young adult status. Should I read the full version, I’m sure I’ll give it a higher ranking.

Intense, moving, a call to action, nonfiction, memoir.
