Akiwenzie-Damm is an absolutely beautiful writer and there is so much raw emotion caught between these pages. I also loved how the characters subtly showed up in different stories - it really emphasized that they were part of a shared community.
My favorite stories in the collection were: "The Blackbird Cage", "Mashkii-akii", and "the day I learned to fly".

I thought most of these stories were just okay, but I enjoyed the humor and small snapshots of life sprinkled throughout. My favorite story was The Day I Learned to Fly, it felt emblematic of the themes and style of the stories at its best. But overall this just didn’t do much for me.
