The story of Aria the Sineater, her PI buddy cursed with souls possessing him, and third leg of the love triangle, Jacob the Mayor's guy who happens to also be a wizard continues in this second installment of the Aria Knight chronicles.
I really recommend you read the first volume before this one. There's a bit of backstory about why her PI buddy acts the way he does, as well as some political fighting between people who are afraid of magic (Watchers) and magical people who are afraid of the Watchers (Guardians) in this city of Miracle Falls that you might find confusing if you haven't read the first book.
The first book felt a little more straightforward then this one. Piled on top of the love triangle issues are also Aria's quest to find her mother, Pi Buddy still cursed and growing darker, the fight between those who have magic and those who do not, as well as Aria's estrangement from her mentor sin-eater Edwin. This book adds another, major issue to the mix at the end (which I won't spoil here) so sometimes the plot felt a little crowded with emergencies.
But when it comes down to it, Aria's sin-eating is an interesting concept. I'm not always pleased with the wide range of powers that seems to come along with it, but the moral concepts are quite interesting. Also, while Jacob feels a little bland to me, possessed PI Buddy is always a hot mess of fun on the page.
I'm hoping the third novel will work out the plot kinks and focus in on only two or three problems.

This second book in the Aria Knight Chronicles picks up where Sin Eater left off with Aria and Harry working together and preparing for a trip to find Aria's mother. Jacob is also a prominent character his strengths shine in this one. The story is fast-paced and well-written with the discord between the Guardians and Watchers escalating to keep the pages turning. Plus, Aria finds her mother and gets more than bargained for. Aria is still a strong heroine, but her personality doesn't feel quite as big in this one. Harry remains a favorite for this reader with his ride-along spirits and larger than life personality. There's also a bit of romance as Jacob and Aria tiptoe around their feelings for each other while Harry's jealousy grows. The story does end with a cliffy, and there are several questions to be answered in the next addition to this series.
