A decent between the wars entertainment, with clues, incident, red herrings abounding. There’s a muddled rush near the end, but let’s chalk it up to its being a posthumous publication; perhaps Miss Haynes would have smoothed it out.

This book is a tough one to rate.
The writing is quite pedestrian in places, especially near the start.
But this improves greatly as the book progresses and I became intrigued with the character of Charmian Karslake.
I don't think enough clues were given to guess the murderer, but this was an enjoyable tale none the less and I will read more by [a:Annie Haynes|7762813|Annie Haynes|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/f_50x66-6a03a5c12233c941481992b82eea8d23.png]. I own at least another two of her books.

Haynes has occasional flashes of solid writing, but this is a bit dull even for a procedural, with plenty of reiteration of every main point. It isn't at all "fair play", either. It passes the time but isn't particularly memorable.
