This is a strangely quiet sort of book, considering how loud it's subjects are: the history of slavery in Portugal and how its legacy trickles down to today's world. Arena uses his own family history and that of friends to tell a story of forced displacement and of cultures grown in small, sometimes hostile spaces. I knew next to nothing about Cape Verde and Portugal before reading this book and it pushed me to do my own research, which I always appreciate in media! Also I have to commend the translator as I don't remember stumbling across any awkward phrases.
