Barth introduces a selection of personages, predominantly continental, who helped shape the thought and theology of the 18th and then the 19th centuries. Each chapter is a self contained unit and as such can be used as a reference book or primer on the different individuals mentioned. The most noteworthy aspect of the book is that Barth consistently tries to not comment on what he outlined as their major thoughts and seeks to use the reaction of their peers as a way of introducing counter views and problems with their ideas.
