If you are seeking a nonfiction companion for Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain, I recommend Elaine Fowler Palencia's On Rising Ground. The book travels through the letters of a poor homesick mountain man roped into fighting for rich slaveholding noncombatants. Aimless marching, infectious disease, malnutrition, and disillusionment prove to be as deadly as musket balls.
