I loved the mashup of picturebook and graphic novel; a great introduction to graphic novels for grades K-3. The story follows Bobby Beacon, who has trouble controlling his temper. The narrative speaks to the experiences of Black students, who are disproportionately disciplined for misbehavior far more often than their White counterparts. Loved how the real superheroes of this story are compassionate teachers.

This has it all- a real-life superhero, social-emotional learning, and a loving, inclusive and supportive teacher.

An amazingly read/acted graphic picture book/audiobook by @authorderrickdbarnes I loved the focus on controlling anger and the use of Langston Hughes references. A great addition to elementary/middle schools!

I dig it. I wasn’t suprised to see that Derrick Barnes wrote it.
It’s got kids struggling with superpowers and some school supervillains.
My six-year-old gobbled it up and asked for another.
I think he really empathized with Bobby Beacon.
It’s a good length for an elementary school book too.
I couldn’t ask for more.

Bobby Beacon has trouble controlling his temper and as a result gets in trouble at school, until he meets a teacher who treats him with respect and teaches him how to calm down when he feels his temper flaring. Oh but wait--did I mention that Bobby is a budding superhero with the power to shoot lava from his hands when he gets upset, and that his school is the Academy for Kids with Awesome Abilitiies, and that his archnemesis is Headmaster Chaos from the Institute for Supervillians!? This picture book is told in graphic novel format which will allow this important story to resonate with kids in a fun way. They may enjoy it so much that they don't even realize the lessons they are learning along the way: How to control ones temper, the importance of kids having adults who believe in them, and the value of second chances. -SKB
