Snake cults and Alice Healy make an awesome combination. Possibly my favorite of the short stories thus far -- love Naga and his personality mightily.

Next up in my InCryptid read-through is Snakes and Ladders. Written by Seanan McGuire, this is one of the later Fran/Jon stories in the series – number 12, to be exact. The best part of this story, if you ask me, would have to be Alice and Mary.

Mary got her own tale in the last short story, and I'm glad to see she's still hanging around. Though clearly, she's got a lot of learning left. The sass and humor in this short were nicely done and are, without a doubt, my favorite part of the whole plot.

It seems like we can't go far without seeing somebody obsessed with worshiping snake gods. You'd think that the dumb humans would learn that this is bad for their health at some point, especially if they force the Healy's into the mix. Apparently, you'd be wrong.

Great short story, getting both Fran and Alice's POV, and yeah, nice and enjoyable to read, because even though it has violence and worry, it has a happy ending, which the next two, won't.

Alice is finally old enough to go trick or treating, so Fran takes her and Mary out for some Halloween fun. They are having a great time until someone decides to kidnap Alice.

I think this may be my favourite of the short stories so far. Healy's and Hallowe'en seem like an ideal combination, and this short story doesn't disappoint - it combined Hallowe'en hijinx and a nice dose of humour with a good plot twist, the first instances of us seeing things from Alice's point of view, and heroics on the part of the Aeslin Mice. What more could I ask?

There are generally two kinds of Incryptid shorts; vignettes, that don't really have a plot, and more plot-based short stories. This is one of the plotty shorts, and a very enjoyable one. Fran takes Alice trick-or-treating and typical Healy hijinks ensue.
