I had this book on my shelf... not sure why, maybe because my kids needed for school. Anyway, it was ok, not sure why they would have read it for school.

I really enjoyed the narrator's voice in this novel. Little Skiff is a boy with a lot of issues; dead mother, drunk grieving father, and a sunk boat. His summer is spent trying to make money to fix the boat. His relationships with his father, his boat, and the sea makes this tale both moving and memorable.

Skiff Beaman is the kind of character that sticks with me. He narrates this tale of personal formidability, ethos, and determination with such a clear, loveable, wonderful-kid voice. I wouldn’t necessarily hand this book straight to a kid, because it would take a strong reader to decipher the dialect and nautical jargon. But it’s a great book nonetheless. It would be great for a read-aloud, but only if you can do a Maine accent.
