I think this is one of the random books my mother used to buy me. She often bought remaindered books for me (I was an entirely voracious reader as a child) and a reduced hardback is good value, right? I presume she bought this because of the title, I liked smugglers, being a big fan of the Famous Five at junior school. I've owned this since 1981, according to the note of my name and the date (Mum's handwriting) in the front. It's also marked with my unicorn stamp. :D
I've lost the dust jacket which is a shame, the illustrations are great, allegedly by the narrator who is writing the story. I remember being puzzled by the names of several of the children - I didn't realise the narrator was female for some time (Americans, eh?) Parvis - that's the dog - Persis (the narrator), Hamilton, and Jared, I didn't know anyone called Jared. And they all have nicknames as well, or pseudonyms, to conceal their identity.
Anyway the kids live in Cape Cod during the summer, with their dad (he's not Rachel's dad though, is she a cousin? I can't remember) who is a sculptor. I guess their mom is dead. They investigate things. They've been involved in solving a crime the year before this adventure, and some of the events are tied to that. They wear ridiculous disguises and get in trouble for spying on grown ups but their crazy theories are all too correct. Great stuff. I always think of this when I read about Cape Cod. :)
