Poem-mobiles and cars of the future! Let your imagination take flight to new transportation heights!

What a fun book with quick poems that accompany beautiful and imaginative illustrations. The variety of vehicles will appeal to guys and gals - young or old. It could also jump start ideas for a new car of your own or even a new car with a new poem!

Reviewed from a library copy.

All kinds of nifty autos in this one, like the Banana Split Car and the Bathtub Car as well as Supersonic Ionic Car, to draw in car-lovers and non-car-lovers alike. Great writing prompts! Pair this with IF I BUILT A CAR by Chris Van Dusen.

The authors and illustrator imagine a variety of cars that incorporate dinosaurs, rubber bands, eels, dragons and tropes from nursery rhymes such as the old lady that lived in a shoe. The colorful illustrations enhance and provide context for the short verses. The book could serve as a tool to introduce young male readers interested in cars and mechanics to poetry. The book would be appropriate to share as a read aloud with children between birth and five years old. Older readers between seven and eight may be independently read and enjoy these poems.

The illustrations make this book. the poems were good, don't get me wrong, but there is something really special about the art in this book. I loved that each page had a different color palate and yet despite that, it all felt very unified. The style of Jeremy Holmes's illustration is such that the pictures seem to leap right off the page. I could see this book in the running for a Caldecott.

Illustrations are wonderful and inventive! Kids will love the detail and the imaginative vehicles. Sadly, the poems are more pedestrian and don't have the imaginative use of language to match the illustrations.

Kids will love this book - the poems are catchy and clever and the illustrations keep your eyes glued on the page! Which car do you want? Mine is a tie between The Banana Split Car and The Supersonic Ionic Car (hmmm, maybe never being late again) and Rubber-Band Car (jump over traffic???)
Very fun read!

4.5 This book of crazy, wacky poems is just plain fun. I plan to use it as a writing starter/prompt with my fourth graders....read them a poem without sharing the illustration, get them to sketch what they see in their minds eye from the words alone, then share the illustration. I can see the writing continuing on from there...some of my clever kids will fly!
