this is literally the cutest shit i read in my entire motherfucking life and I'm here for it. how do i put this into words.. my current predicament is quite ironic considering that this book approaches the subject of communication on another level :))

ꗃ : ˖ ︳ “The alphabet mafia. LGBTQ+.” She explains, “You’re the G, you know, gay. I’m the plus, pan, since it doesn’t have a P in there.”

to be blunt, i absolutely loved this book. initially, i had a couple of doubts before picking it up, yet the craving for lgbtq+ books during pride month will never be saturated for as long as i live, so the second i read the description, i was sold. i was expecting it to be a fun read, but i did not imagine that I'd finish it in one sitting. one. (and you gotta understand, i'm a slow, mood reader) like damn!

the first point i have to get across is that the characters in this book are literally unforgettable. starting with my favourite "bitch" (/lovingly), Imani, and all the way to the antagonists, it felt as though they all had- volume, you know? each of them brought something to the story that was more than plot triggers, even the bullies and the dreaded Mr Walters, Jacob's father.

Imani would make you feel like the baddest bitch, not to mention the wiccan representation! it's so hard to find good witchery in books completely unrelated to it, so the second she said she's wiccan, i prayed it would be good AND IT WAS! Seth is the token straight of the group, but as Imani said, we forgave him for that, and he has this whole mum energy like he'd make a presentation only to talk you out of some stupid impulsive thing you want to try, all the while fully judging you. Jacob slayed the whole book, i feared we'd get the typical (toxic) bad boy trope, and yet he was nothing but respectful and a gentleman (Skyler's mum's words, not mine).

Sky's parents. I want parents like that, that would fight for you to have your freedom and to be yourself even when they don't quite understand it, most interactions between them made me feel this longing and pang in my heart, a good type of jealousy. All the while still being parents and knowing where to cross the line! we need more parents like that in books.

And then there's Skyler himself. First of all, his backstory broke me too, in a way in which made take 5 minutes and whisper to myself that there are way too many things i take for granted, like, per example, my voice. His anxieties and the actions he takes are another thing that hits right home, it reminds me of myself and of how the Impostor Syndrome can make you self sabotage your relationships, be it platonic or romantic. And this guy likes what he likes without giving a damn! He wears skirts and paints his nails and lets Imani put makeup on him and he ate the whole book without leaving any crumbs. Ok, I'll have to stop here because I'll go on another hour long rant.

another thing that got my attention was the writing. the first thing i thought was: holy- this is such a gen z thing, and i was living for it. it's true that at times the dialogues felt a bit out of place but even so, I'm easily willing to look past that and turn my head the other side because the rest was straight up my alley. I'm a slow reader, and mood influences me a lot, so the fact that i picked the book then sat down and finished it all in one go shocked me, and this was not a book any different than any other in length! wow! it was a quick and fun read and it captivated me all the way until the last page.

so, in conclusion, this was the cutest thing i ever read and i love this book with my whole heart and I'm never going to stop talking about it now. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

ps. happy pride month!

Old me gives this book more of a 3, but this is for me in middle school. Me who needed this. Who would have lost their mind and loved every part that I cringed. I wish I had this romance story when I was younger.

Author uses the term "pooches" way too much. I also felt the story needed more plot, it felt unfinished. There's definitely room for improvement, but it was okay.

I really did enjoy this it was very light and fluffy. The stubbornness did take away from a bit of the enjoyment at the end but overall i liked how it ended. It was a nice book to just sit down read and get immersed into a story.

I have never wanted to hug two characters more! This story deals with issues around sexuality, gender, religion, ableism and yet still manages to be incredibly sweet.

Some descriptions were a little repetitive, especially about the characters where they could have been rounded out more.
