I’ve been wanting to read this book for awhile, but it didn’t quite live up to the hype. Some of the essays were great, but many more were lengthy & boring. What I enjoyed the most is the author’s descriptive imagery and ability to paint a picture with imaginative words.

The parts where she talks about her daughters or her extended family members are where this book shines. Disagreed with some of her opinions and felt that she gave too much credit to white people at times. Her essay about the n word was by far my least favorite. I don't think she adds anything new when discussing race but she had some interesting stories.
