I read two of Tayari Jones’s short stories for free in Audible, “Half Light” and “Dispossession”. Both were really good but really different types of stories. I think that’s one of her most interesting things. For me, all of her stories and books are good, they are written in similar styles and voices but none of them are really alike, but you can see and feel her throughout. Anyways, I liked this book about a woman’s reflection of how she raised her Black son and the impact it has on their current relationship once he is an adult. It’s performed by Gabby Union, and I mostly believed her.

In today’s episode of “I tried really hard to like this book”: a boring story that feels too mechanic to be emotional.

The book surfaces themes of race, wealth, and family. But they all feel underdeveloped. Maybe it’s because for a short story it is trying to do too much, maybe it’s something else. I just had a hard time to relate.

This book was a short, free, audiobook on Audible. I chose it to go in between a couple of other long books, just to break things up a bit.
Gabrielle Union did the narrating, and she was fabulous.
The writing itself was tremendous! I'm definitely going to check out more by Tayari Jones!!!

It's a good reflective piece but if you are looking for a resolved story this isn't it.

Listening Time: 57 min
Well narrated short story chronicling the experiences and struggles of a black woman as a mother, daughter, sister and aunt.
Recommended for fans of contemporary and women's fiction, but not to my taste as I prefer eventful mysteries or fantasies rather than introspective pieces like this one.
