This contemporary fiction is the prequel to Little Mercies.  I’d already read Little Mercies and actually think this prequel was more enjoyable because I’d read the other one first.  In this one, a social worker is assisting in a police investigation of the murder of a four-year-old’s mother that has links to a murder from the past.  I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by this author, and this story and the characters was another entertaining read.  4.25/5 stars.

I'm feeling kind of lost that I have finished this book. I LOVED it and I cannot wait until Little Mercies!!

A few years ago I read a book by this author and I hated it. It was disturbing and sad so I said I would never read her again even though I have two of her books on my Nook already. I got this as a free book and I decided to give it a try and I liked it. I will be reading the Little Mercies.

Enjoyed this novella featuring social worker Ellen and her struggles balancing an emotionally grueling job and her family. It's an interesting angle to take on a crime--the social worker's instead of the police officer's or detective's, but because she's friends with them, you get that piece too but not so much of the nitty gritty.

I would have liked a little more filler because the end came rather abruptly.

Looking forward to reading about the main character Ellen in the author's forthcoming book!

I enjoyed this little prequel, it was interesting to see the characters not under the same stressful situations. But...I feel lost in what happened to Jonah... I've read Little Mercies, I guess I went through it too quickly since I don't remember if Jonah was THAT guy. I don't think so? I'm not sure though.

Bardziej nowelka niż książka. Może przez to, że taka krótka wydała mi się jakaś taka naiwna i mało przekonująca. Trochę szkoda czasu.

It's not that they don't love their kids - I know they do - but something has distracted them; a boyfriend, alcohol, drugs or life has hardened them so that they aren't capable of expressing that kind of love.

A prequel to [a:Heather Gudenkauf|2875124|Heather Gudenkauf|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1383946596p2/2875124.jpg] new novel releasing later this year. It was short, but I connected with the characters and was totally hooked by the story. This novella was just to introduce us to the new characters. If you've never read any of her previous books, my favorite is [b:One Breath Away|14597718|One Breath Away|Heather Gudenkauf|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1355099275s/14597718.jpg|18285607], I read it in one day.
