I enjoyed the storytelling overall, but I felt it to be unnecessarily long. It could have been more successful in my opinion if Lodato edited more out.

These characters were so exquisitely written, and the story was deeply compelling. I would have preferred more about young Florence though.

My review from Audible

"Liked this peculiar story - disliked the narration"

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I had originally started this book reading it in print - but switched to the audiobook after the book was due back at the library. I would have much rather continued reading the print version than the audiobook.

How did the narrator detract from the book?
He had such a wobbly voice - it constantly sounded like every character was choked up or crying THE ENTIRE TIME. It was so annoying and really took away from the storyline which was good.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes why not.

Any additional comments?
GET THIS IN PRINT IF YOU WANT THE FULL EFFECT OF THIS STORY. Seriously!

Had a good editor excised about 150 pages from this book, it would have been a clear "5". Lodato's writing is stellar, almost transcendent. Edgar Allen, age 8, then 9, tells us his story and it is a doozy. Edgar has albinism and is on the autism spectrum. Seeing his dysfunctional world through his eyes and behavior kept me up nights.

The structure of this book, starting with his grandmother and ending with months of the year that Edgar is kidnapped, was unique. Worked well for me.

I ended up skipping parts of the book near the end. At over 500 pages, I lost interest in much of the detail of what Lucy was doing. Really, a good edit would have been appreicated. Still, I recommend. I'll read anything that this author reads because his prose sings.

I made my self read the whole book but I really didn’t like it.I think it was the dark subject matter and that the characters were not that endearing. I was drawn into the story but it just went on too long.
