Great Joy by Kate DiCamillo

I can't believe I didn't like a Kate DiCamillo story, but here we are. I didn't hate it, but I found it lacklustre and disappointing. For a book published in 2007 (not 1960!) the illustrations lack diversity, and the story is confusing at best. This book reads like an Ikea user manual.

Excellent story of the true meaning of Christmas - caring and compassion - from a child’s perspective.

Oh, how this pains me to give Ms. Dicamillo one star. I was so disappointed in this book that I wanted to cry in my soup. I got to the last page and was sure that the remaining book must have gotten lost somewhere on its way into my hands, but no such luck. I will hang on to my feelings of love for this writer and hold out hope for another Despereaux-esque masterpiece!

Read it again for Christmas 2015 and still had tears streaming down my face as I read. A beautiful book.

Such a sweet storyline, and I won’t lie, I got a little teary-eyed at the ending.

Kate DiCamillo is my favorite author. She consistently produces stories that are inspiring and encouraging. This is a great story to read at Christmas and remember the great gift of Joy we have to offer one another.

It’s up on the front board if any of my students would like to borrow it!
