Faulkner never disappoints.

I never automatically list William Faulkner as one of my favorite authors, but I should. I’ve never read something by Faulkner that didn’t move me. His writing is so deeply human and his style so simultaneously haunting and touching.

Light in August did not disappoint. Excellent characters, excellent narrative, excellent storylines.

I can totally get lost in Faulkner's words and characters. Nothing is easy or one-dimensional in this story, as in real life. The enigmatic Joe Christmas is a biracial man in the South, not able to find comfort in either black or white society. Many strange and quirky characters fill out the rest of the book, and make for an interesting overlapping of lives and relationships. Overall it is a story of racism, isolation, and humanity (and many times the lack of said humanity.)
