My first Doctor Who novel with Martha Jones as the companion.

description

When I bought this book, I never heard of the Zygons. I had no idea what they could do. I only knew the Doctor met them in the Classic Series.
By the time I read it, I met the Zygons during the 50th Anniversary Special, and their story in season 9. And I think that was a bad move. If I read this book before their return to the series, I think I would not have minded the differences between the Zygons in the book and in the series.

The setting for the story was something new for me. Edwardian England, where the first cars are riding the paths and hunting is a common sport.
What I didn't expect were the tons of action. I thought it would be more of a conspiracy where they had to find out who was a human and who was a Zygon. After all, that was a great part of the story. But the writer succeeded in putting a lot of chasing sequences and spine chilling moments in it without losing its focus on the mystery.

The book gave me a good look at what Martha is capable of. She still is the calm woman she was in the beginning of her story arc, but manages to show us a beautiful chemistry with the Doctor.
It's only unfortunate that they changed the Zygons so much in the new series. The best way to see them, is as two different kinds of Zygons. That way, you can enjoy a nice story of Doctor who.

It's unbelievable how much I enjoyed this story. It helped a lot that I could hear David Tennant's Doctor in my ear all the while. It has quite a few unexpected plot twists and a lot of running - well, it's Doctor Who after all.

Hmmm not finishing this - 1*

I'll find another Doctor Who book because Martha is dull and this book has zero plot. I'd rather watch tumbleweed roll.

I got 34 way through and I honestly couldn't go any further.

It was alright for a DW adventure. Not the best of the novels.

Glad I read this after I finally learned to like Martha. Not really sure how I would've reacted to an entire book with her in it. But it was interesting and nice to see the Zygons. It was good to get this after the 50th since they've seen a revival.
