I thought I would like this more since it's an antihero/criminal bastard main character doing evil stuff and that's my brand.
This is still a solid book (3.5 stars) but I just didn't like how the timelines were all over the place.
Also none of the characters were set up consistently, meaning once you thought you *got* a character they would do something completely against their established morals & ambitions.
And, for a first book in a series, it didn't do a great job at establishing character motivations and relationships.

A very interesting book indeed with a fast-paced, intricate plot and a cast of interesting characters. While Artemis has the mental capacity and level of maturity way beyond his twelve years, it is acceptable, I guess, in a world where fairies coexist with humans. The world building is good so far (considering how short this book is, we really can't expect more than what we have already got). Butler also is way beyond what a human can achieve. With their combined supernatural strength and intelligence, I just don't see how this duo can ever be beaten. I am looking forward to the next book and hopefully it will be better than this one.

I remember having this book as a kid but I don’t think I ever actually read it.
After reading ‘Highfire’ I’ve been really excited to read more from the author.

5 stars for nostalgic reasons. Objectively probably a 4 but I think 11 year old me might kill me if I ever lower this rating from a re-read. For a middle grade series, Colfer establishes a great world and characters. Plot is definitely faster paced than I remembered but this is not a bad thing. A criminally underrated series that should be giving other children academic superiority complexes for generations.

This did not feel like a middle grade book but I LOVED it! Forgot how good this audiobook was. Also surprisingly violent at times!!! Damb!!!!
