Well, STORMHAVEN was full of obstacles for our heroes Whyborne and Griffin -- a deadly murder, strange dreams, Griffin's visiting parents, and an insane asylum bringing back painful memories. I think for me there was a little too much going on and this lessened my enjoyment in this installment. I also found myself getting annoyed with how little confidence Whyborne had in their relationship even though Griffin regularly expressed how much he loved Whyborne. Based on the concluding events of STORMHAVEN I hope future books will show these two on more solid footing.

Outside of those issues I liked the mystery and found the dweller of the deep really cool. As usual, we saw plenty of Christine and she was delightful. We also got to learn a lot more about Griffin's history though it's incredibly painful.

Content Warning: references to Griffin's past stay in an asylum where he was abused and raped; on page abuse of existing asylum patients

First read: August 2015

Second read (not including previous audiobook): July 2020

Thank goodness for these books and for comfort reads. If any year needed them, this one is it. Upping my rating because...duh! W&G are the best!

It's always lovely to see Griffin and his Ival again! I'm not sure why I always take so long reading these books. My head tells me I'm not in the mood for historical or horror, but then when I read it, my heart says "yes! you idiot!"

I didn't find this story quite as scary as the first books in the series, but I definitely felt the emotion and connection between Griffin and Percival. Maybe there are a few too many cults active around this same small town, but it figures that, even indirectly, Niles Whyborne would be involved.

Thoroughly enjoyable series that has so far, consistently delivered on the mystery, the fear factor, and the smart writing. What also counts significantly is the relationship between Whyborne and Griffin, which is only further strengthened, the depth of their feelings now firmly known and cemented in this installment.

This go around Whyborne and Griffin, along with the unflappable Christine, try to prove a man’s innocence in a most suspicious murder. Nobody does prim and proper better than Whyborne, making this extra fun as he gets himself into one scrape after the other. Despite his huge reluctance to get involved, he reassuringly comes through quite triumphantly.

Griffin here, is horribly and devastatingly affected by his past and his current familial struggles, but thankfully he draws on his relationship with Whyborne for strength and fortitude. He puts his detective skills to work under the pressure of his even stronger sense of justice, and he and Whyborne uncover a sinister plan of revenge that will of course, destroy the world if it comes to fruition.

So yes, this gradually builds towards an explosive finish. It was entertaining and surprisingly (and always appreciated) more sexy and heartfelt than the last. The emotional weight of the interpersonal and external struggles these two go through only enriched the reading experience. I definitely look forward to more of this great duo.

Fun and easy, despite the Cthulhu-inspired mythos and plot and the rather grim trappings of the setting.
