The Passenger is an absolutely stunning work of literature. It follows a middle-class Jewish man trying to escape his fate by riding the train endlessly, back and forth between German cities until he loses his mind. This book focuses mostly on the inner-workings of the main character, Otto Silbermann, as he tries to make sense of the tragedy all around him. However, it also provides insight into various Germans, and their attitudes and circumstances during this era. It is a unique, humanizing, and powerful account of the first days of the holocaust.
