the seixsm and objectification of women was a bit too much. there are other Chinese stories that I'd rather read.

To be very honest, I did not finish the entire book, I think I have one or two short stories left.

Since it is a collection of short stories, I found myself going back and forth between them, choosing them based on my mood each day rather than reading them in the presented sequence. Some, I had to skip because I did not find them enjoyable, but then I did like others very much. I always enjoy reading translated book from Asia because of how different the language structures are from English. At times, it can be very hard to fully translate the meanings and as a reader, I tend to notice when I fail to grasp it as well.

I felt very heavily Mo Yan's preface introduction, and it definitely helped me navigate his stories and his characters. He explores both beautifully and so cruelly notions of sadness, hunger and love. His are tales of compromises, of harsh realities, of survival through the stretching of humanity's horizons.

The collection is an interesting experience-a different way of writing, almost like an oral story telling. I enjoyed it.
