I have, for a very long time, been opposed to the death penalty. It seems inhumane, unjust in the way it is often administered, and contrary to how I view the nature of God. Yes, I know that there is capital punishment in the Old Testament, but the question is why? And is that the final destination of the biblical witness?

While I'm not a John Yoder disciple, I found The End of Sacrifice to be a strong and deeply biblical response to the issue of Capital Punishment. For him, the idea of retaliation (the need for blood for blood), and retaliation is at the heart of capital punishment, is brought to a close on the cross.

This book is edited by John Nugent, who has drawn together a series of texts, some previously published, some not, and makes them available to us in a helpful package. After reading this, even if you don't agree at all points, you will have to deeply consider whether as a Christian you can affirm capital punishment!

Thanks John.
