It hasn't aged as well as better known 19th century writing, but Surtees' comic portraits of English society also take a more jovial approach than, say, Dickens. Jorrocks is a Cockney grocer made good, living in London and patronising his beloved Surrey Hunt, and the stories of the book comprise a series of excursions to Newmarket, Paris, Margate, etc. Occasionally difficult to follow but generally with understandable punchlines, I thought the greater value was in the glimpse the book offers into its time, the people and their entertainments.
It's only short, but somehow managed to take me a while to get through - would recommend mainly for historical interest.
