Absolutely brilliant second book in this trilogy; and with a massive twist or two at the end! I can't wait to read the final book as it's been set up to open with a bang!

4.5 stars.
Really really good. Perhaps not as good as [b:Nevernight|26114463|Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)|Jay Kristoff|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1500688832l/26114463._SY75_.jpg|42805826], but still very good.
Dark, violent, gory, but really well written. At some points, I honestly felt a little nauseous. And yet, I felt the pull to keep reading.
The worldbuilding is fantastic, and the mix of Italian classical elements and fantasy is awesome. A colosseum? With gladiators fighting a massive worm that spits acid? Let's just say, the stakes were raised.
Kristoff really knows how to pull off a twist. He plays with our expectation of who a hero should be: someone who saves the day, fights for justice, and cares for her friends more than she thought she would. He makes the characters do exactly the opposite of what's expected and he then pulls the wool over your eyes again. Mia appears to contradict this definition. And to argue otherwise, would unfortunately be a spoiler.
Here are my spoilery thoughts (and this list is still growing):
2. I knew Trick was alive. If you can't see the body, the character is alive. Of course, Kristoff played with this expectation too, by making us believe that Mia had murdered all of her gladiatti friends in cold blood so she could seek out her revenge. That was such a crazy twist, but Kristoff makes you believe it because Mia's already killed so many people for her revenge. Why not kill her friends, if it gets her that much closer to slitting the throats of her parents' killers?

Spoiler
1. It was extremely obvious that Mia's brother Jonnen is alive. I was surprised though that he turned out to be her half-brother, and that the senator is his father. She 'saves' Jonnen, but also continues the cycle of revenge by killing Jonnen's father in front of him. Trick is right, Mia has been blinded by her desire for revenge. She did not do anything to end the injustice and violence of the slavery in Godsgrave, and she continued the cycle of revenge.2. I knew Trick was alive.
