Couldn't find this one via any of my free ebook sources, so had to fork over $4.99 to Amazon for a Kindle book. Totally worth the price. Characters from previous books who managed to not be killed off are offered a million dollars if they can survive a haunted house for one night.

You should definitely read Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, and The List before reading this one.

And the author ended up self-publishing so give him a break with the editing issues FFS.

This was a perfect treadmill/beach book for the first week of school. Quick paced, scary, gross and not deep at all.

well after reading AFRAID, TRAPPED and ENDURANCE all by J. Killborn previous to this, HAUNTED HOUSE was a bit of a disappointment.

The book takes forever to get going, it is quite repetitive and seriously, how many times does a dark dreary corridor have to be described... Exactly the same way?

In saying all of that I did get through the book quite quickly and it is funny in places with a good bit of classic Kilborn gore splashed in there - which is always a good thing!

All in all I would class this one as 'OK' but I think my expectations were set high after reading Kilborn's other books which are all fantastic.

Loved the tie-ins, loved the plot, loved the characters. I won't give anything away but this is another Kilborn novel that won't disappoint!

WOW is all I have to say about this book. Definitely an excellent read that sucks you in from word number 1 and doesn't let go until the very end!

DISAPPOINTING quality wise. Years ago I became a HUGE fan of Konrath when he was putting out complexly plotted books, that were perfectly edited and interacting with fans. Now that he has gotten rich that quality has disappeared (the last 3 releases have been wanting in quality). This book had a number of errors. First, were the NUMEROUS editing errors of wrong word usage, misspelling, and more than once using the wrong character name! Second, was lack of character development. Okay so, many of the characters were stars from previous books. In this book they open as fearful and weak and all displaying the same traits. Then there is no progression or development until 80+ % into the book they suddenly all at the same time, with no interaction with each other, change personality 180° and give up so they have no fear. Third, the plot has problems. The beginning was disjointed bouncing around between nine different people's POV. Made it hard to stay focused. Then later in the book you'd get scenes saying one character's name when it was obviously a different character. Fourth, the reveal had to be explained. Meaning the only clue was one line of dialog in the first part of the book by a secondary character and then suddenly at the end a character TELLS how he figured it out. Fifth, it was suppose to be scary. Anticipatory fear was sadly missing from this book. All you had was gruesome things popping out around each and every corner. It was too over the top to be believed. I'm sure you've all seen those squeal #8 horror movies where it is startling monsters that jump out are the only scares. That's what this was like.

The epilogue pages regarding F* & B* were excellent. Unfortunately given the declining quality in the last three books...as much as I want to read Origin #2, the next Chandler, and the next Jack Daniel books I'm NO LONGER comfortable with them being an automatic buy. I'll wait for a copy from the library, because it is clear this author needs to get his head back in the game and plot and EDIT the stories he should show us. 2.5/5 stars(less)

I had a tough time getting past the initial set up. Several people who have been through an absolutely horrific experience are approached about participating in a fear study sponsored by the US government. The FBI shows up at their house with this "urgent" message and say if they complete the study they will get $1 million. And they really believe the US government is just going to give them $1 million?? Anyway, they go, and once again, horrific things happen to them in this study where they have to stay overnight in a haunted house.

This was not my favorite in the Afraid series, but it was also not my least favorite. Once you get past the set-up, it's fast-paced, creepy, and not quite as overly gruesome as some of the others in the series. And it's a very creative concept, bringing back characters from previous books, sort of like an all-star horror book. And I did enjoy the twist that explained how this haunting was enabled. If you've liked Kilborn's other books, you'll probably like this.
