I thought the book was pretty brilliant, though despite being written by a white man born in the 40s—the way the female and non-white characters were written was very questionable. That truncated worldview didn’t really affect this story much.
Oh, but the Rosalind Franklin erasure was criminal.
It also was difficult to keep track of all the middle aged white dude characters since that was kinda all we had to go off of.
The story was very much alive and it was a good ending. Ian Malcolm was an amazing asshole, just such a great character. And he had some of the most poignant dialogue in the book.
“Let’s be clear. The planet is not in jeopardy. We are in jeopardy. We haven’t got the power to destroy the planet—or to save it. But we might have the power to save ourselves.”
Or the more concise
“The planet has survived everything, in its time. It will certainly survive us.”
The dialogue about the unchecked power of science was also marvelous. I’m not going to write them out but pages 342-343. And pg 319.
I just loved this book.

I’m going to be honest, the movie is much better, at least when it comes to the characters—who vary from being just there, to annoying, to absolutely insufferable. The dinosaurs were cool though. Would love to see someone try and take a dinosaur out with a rocket launcher on screen someday.

Well worth the read, even after seeing the movie like a dozen times. There are better character motivations and interesting dialogue, though some of the characters felt one dimensional (primarily the female characters).
The prose was sometimes repetitive, but forgivably so. Crichton seemed to be obsessed with intestines when writing this book.
Malcolm was the best character in the book, Grant was the best character in the movie, and the kids are annoying in both.
Loved the science/maths stuff.
