Masterful writing. This has never been on my radar, but I've heard SO MANY folks sing the praises of Becky Chambers - I get it now. This was exciting while still managing to be relaxing and cozy. I loved that the science felt believable and how seamlessly Chambers integrated the different critical themes and topics throughout the narrative. It took me nearly 2 months to get through this, though (when usually I can read books in a week or so).  While there was nothing specific that I disliked, I think the low stakes just never had me itching to pick this up.

The writing was good, I enjoyed the world building! However, there were times that the non-human characters felt like secondary bits used as tools to move the character development of human characters forward, and some of the characters definitely felt common/classic to the sci-fi genre (🔥✈️)

This is the third Becky Chambers book I’ve read and I think it’s safe to say she’s become one of my favorite writers. This book is just so decent. It feels loving, both to the characters and to the reader. It’s exactly what I wanted and needed right now. I will absolutely be reading the rest of the series.

This book has become quite a comfort to me.  There’s one small part that pings a personal anxiety, but I just skip over it when I re-read.  It’s so worth it to experience this phenomenal story!!  The cast of characters is fascinating and delightful.  Everyone is so unique, but everyone is also fleshed out enough that you really do have a strong sense of them all.  I grew attached to them all almost immediately.  I am not one to normally re-read books, but I think I read this 3 times last year.  It’s a delight, and I hope you think so too!!!

I've been looking forward to reading this one for a long time, and it was well worth the wait. I absolutely loved this! The characters are so fun, and the world building delves deeply into each race's culture and mannerisms in such interesting ways. It's lower action than most scifi, so it won't be everyone's favorite. It reminded me a lot of Firefly and Titan AE.

I think this book struggles with some people due to it's marketing. This is very.. cozy. This is not really exciting, or adventurous. This is a story about a group of people who travel together. It's focus is on shifting Points of View- seeing how humans see aliens, and each other, and how aliens see humans. If you want a story where conflict is generally wrapped up relatively fast, this is for you. If you want a novel were people think about how others love differently- this is for you. There's probably 4x as much content about love and families as their is violence or disquiet. IT's about found family, and people who have learned to make their way in a sometimes uncaring environment.

This is my second read-through of this book and I have to say, I am so glad I read it again. It's been long enough that I had forgotten many of the major plot points and it felt like a new book. And I liked it better this time than before. I was able to appreciate it more as a series of events detailing the lives of a lovely found family, whereas before I was a little miffed by the lack of a satisfying ending. I was fully satisfied this time. I love this book. If you like space operas with ragtag crews, heartwarming family dynamics, and a healthy dose of adventure, read this book.
