Nouwen makes a lot of great points in this book. It would do us all good to have more AWARENESS. Awareness of ourselves, of others placed in our lives, and ultimately, of God and His Spirit.

This is a book to read slowly and savor. I don’t agree with everything. Some of it may be too mystical for me. However there is much good food to ponder. It is worth owning and marking up with underlining and notes. I borrowed it from a friend and need to get my own copy. This friend has been reading it every year since college.

Nouwen is always good. Page 45 is one of the best things I’ve ever read.
“It is the Christ in you, who recognizes the Christ in me. […] from now on wherever you go, or wherever I go, all the ground between us will be holy ground. And when he left I knew that he had revealed to me what community really means.”

Nouwen is a little...squishy for me, but I guess the "spiritual" authors I like the most tend to be like that, Madeleine L'Engle, Ann Lamott. Nouwen also takes himself a little too seriously. Despite these things I found so much helpful about this book, in it's distinction between lonliness and solitude and hostility and hospitality. It just helps with thinking.

Throughout every spiritual movement that Nouwen explains I felt as though he was putting words to experiences and needs that I have been unable to put words to.
