I am giving this 2 stars because the first 300 pages or so are really good. However, by the end of this book I wanted to give it negative stars. A little less than halfway through the book just starts going in circles: good people prosper, the villain does something really horrific, good people are horrified and outraged but NEVER actually do anything against the villain/villain is pleased, good people heal and prosper again, villain....

And the villain never really gets his for any number of the just flat out outrageous and horrendous things he does. The book become very tedious and boring, a Mary-sue and a Gary-stu become the main characters, and the ending is extremely unsatisfying - and the worst part is that it started out great!

Though I can't remember the details clearly, I do remember being profoundly affected by this great novel. It is very well written, drawing me into an era I'm unfamiliar with. The characters were well imagined and so well written. I couldn't put this book down - highly recommended.
