Though this was definitely the weakest in the series so far, it was nice to see Garion come into his own. Also having C'Nedra use her wits to be able to gain an army was great. Pol's reaction to everything that happened was what would be expected with her motherly attitude towards Garion. The transition between books 3 and 5 is what I would have expected from this novel and I am glad that this is what I received.

In this fourth book of the Belgariad, the characters's personalities are more defined. Garion is growing and he is confronted to it's destiny and make choices that do not make everyone happy.

There are still lots of adventures, some fights and plots, but I think this is the development of the characters that are especially interesting in that book.

Not much happens, but it sets up the ending well.

Ik snap het niet. De plot is voorspelbaar, de humor ook, de actie ook, de personages ook. En ik geniet met volle teugen! Het is een feest van herkenning, van ontspannen vermaak. Volgens mij is dat de kracht van Eddings.

So. The story I like. But this book is slow and I hate the female characters: they're vain (boohoo I have not enough boobs), stupid, deceiving, unstable or derive their joy in life from only motherhood or pretty clothes. Towards the end Ce'nedra becomes more tolerable but that doesn't do enough to save. Is it really too much to ask for one decent female character? (Polgagra doesn't count, in the books the kings don't consider her a woman which seems to equal being sain). I know this book is a bit camp and as such could perhaps take the women ironically but quite honestly they just piss me off. Onto the next book, let's hope for better.
