The one where characters develop and stuff happens. Ce'Nedra finally gets to be more than a sooky child and Garion comes into his birthright.

I first read this book as a child, with no context and no finale. The five stars were given in that review, although I admit I remembered nothing of the story except that it started in a cave, and quite confusingly, definitely missing context, although summed up well enough it mostly worked. According to my new system of rating, if I remember the story and liked it, it would be 4 stars. Not remembering, but knowing it was a nice story, would be 3 stars.

The way this book ends gets your blood eagerly boiling for the sequel. Ce'Nedra has finally stopped her intential childishness. 'How did anyone stand me?' Oh, child. We didn't. You almost ruined the last book and ended the series abruptly.
Pol has continued to be too harsh, but she might possibly be less of a b**ch now that she's explaining herself, and showing that she can take care of others with some empathy, though it seems to stretch her sooo far to do it. The temper tantrum at the Main Quest Party™ sneaking out seems just as childish as the teenagers' actions she's always judging, so she hasn't lost her hypocrisy yet. (Neither has Belgarath, but he's much more manageable without Polgara there.)

A couple scenes stand out in my mind when I consider this book, but even after just finishing it, the majority was a lot of background noise and preparation. Rating of this book is subject to change, as with the rest of this series, depending on how memorable it stays.

Less good than the previous ones; this entire book feels a bit: been there done that.

However, I like the evolution of the characters. I enjoy Garion and Ce'Nedra, and I'm looking forward to the conclusion. (But I don’t think I’ll read the Malloreon.)

This is still like sipping hot chocolate on a cold winter day, only I feel like really this is one book in five parts, and the abrupt endings dampen my enjoyment somewhat.

The entire series is a delight, and perfect for any young fantasy fan.
