Eh, probably the least interesting in the series. I am not a fan of the way the Ce'Nedra is treated throughout this book, and Polgara is at her meanest, in my opinion.

This is definitely one of my favourite books in the series. So much happens, with tear-jerking moments and fun, witty exchanges. Exactly what I remembered that I loved about David Eddings' books.

Again, my copy of the audiobook was kind of messed up and sometimes sounded like it was recorded while being played out loud.

But it was all there and allowed me to enjoy a book while working, which is the most fantastic thing!

5 out of 5 stars.

Probably my least favourite of the original five because I really don't like the Riva section and they split up the party as well, while the large cast of characters interacting is one of these books biggest strengths. The Riva section was a huge opportunity for Garion and Ce'Nedra to develop as characters and as a couple, with them both being put in a very unfair situation together. Sadly, instead we get a whole lot of gender stereotypes a la women are emotional and manipulative and men are dense and clueless and they spend most of the time not talking to each other. The whole love story in the entire pentalogy is sadly too much tell and not enough show. There is some showing and some character development, but it is too little and too late in the book.

Still, it remains a really fun and great story in a wonderfully interesting world to discover with a relatively standard but solid plot and fun characters. There's just some bits that haven't aged well. 16-year-old Ce'Nedra having to declare to a room full of adults that she's "a virgin of maritable age", really gives me the creeps.
