It’s not you… it’s me, Brandon. I have tried time and time again. And I know that you are an excellent author and kudos to you for it! But I just can’t do these Brandon Sanderson books! I cant for the life of me conjure up the images that I am supposed to when he creates these new worlds. I had no trouble with Harry Potter and hunger games. So I’m not sure what it is. But i know that it is my problem.

This was the first Brandon Sanderson book that I have actually finished. And I can genuinely say I enjoyed it. I just don’t enjoy this genre. But if you want to try Brandon Sanderson, maybe start here! Spin is an interesting female lead and it’s a good story.

Oh man. Sanderson is fast becoming one of my favourite authors to read. His writing isn’t flowery or particularly poetic. It’s just bang on. All the time. His world-building is near flawless. His action sequences are unparalleled. And his characters are so likeable. I really really liked this one. The running mystery revealed itself perfectly. And although it ultimately played out much as I anticipated as far as the heroics went, it was in the completely satisfying way, not the boring I-know-what’s-gonna-happen way. And it was never clear exactly HOW we’d come to it. Loved it. Read it and tell your daughters (and sons) to read it too. I did.

I’m a big lover of Sci-Fi so when I heard about this book I was so excited to read it, and it definitely lived up to my expectations!

Skyward follows the last of the Human race as they fight back against an alien race called the Krell who seem determined to wipe them out of existence. Spensa, the main character of Skyward, longs to be a pilot just like her father was, but this turns out to be a difficult feat. Spensa’s father has been branded as a coward, having abandoned his people mid fight, getting shot down by his own people because of it. Because of this, Spensa is treated terribly by most of the people living on the planet, and has a hard time getting accepted into the pilot training programme.

I really enjoyed the start of this book and the whole of Skyward flight were amazing. They all felt like well rounded characters and I was interested in every one of them, which was a nice change of pace from some of the others books i’ve read recently. It took me a while to get used to the writing style in the book (I’m not a fan of first person writing) but I ended up enjoying that too by around a quarter of the way through.

EDIT: upon re-reading (February 2024) I’ve changed my mind on the following paragraph with my issues with Spensa’s gift. I don’t know if I read the book in a shorter time frame this time, but I didn’t have the same problems with it, her gift seemed to progress pretty naturally throughout the story, so I’ve added that last star back onto my rating!

——— My main issue with Skyward was the development of Spensa’s gift. It all felt very sudden towards the end of the book, and it never seemed to be hinted at that Spensa was any different than anyone else until the last 100 pages or so. It just bothered me that she didn’t start developing any sort of skills until after she found out about her father, it would have been nice to see little hints of it at the start as well, other than Spensa just being a good pilot. ———

Overall, I really enjoyed Skyward and I’m really looking forward to the next book! I’ll definitely be checking out more of Brandon Sandersons work now as well
