(This will seem like a weird thing to react to, but I found the drawings really distracting and incongruous. This is a book of stories about an island, and the people on that island. But the stories are told in very plain, unadorned language. So why the highly-stylized images of people with curlicues in their hair and long eyelashes and rosy cheeks and suits & ties? I didn't get any of that from the text, and the images didn't add anything back in a way that brought the text to life. Why not a detailed hand-drawn map of the island? A compass and here be monsters type of thing. And maybe more naturalistic drawings, in keeping with a mysterious, newly-mapped island. Less Punch magazine circa 1890 and more along the Walton Ford side of Audubon.)
